I am a big fan of Cajun music and Cajun myths that grew out of the hot and humid weather down in Louisiana. My ol' songwriting partner Ron from Nashville brought this song title and wanted me to help him write a fun Cajun dance tune. I wonder if dance lessons are offered in heaven? Ron could not dance a step, but he was sure a good songwriter.

Blood On the Cajun Moon

It was the kind of night in ol' Big Mamou where your clothes stick to your skin
I'd driven in from east of Monroe for a dance at the Ponchatrain Inn
In the glow of a full moon I spied a bronze beauty, with eyes of cornflower blue
Later we twirled to ol' Jole Blon. She was the prettiest girl in Mamou
The lights went down around midnight and we danced 'til the end of the song
But I never kissed my wild beauty for she was suddenly gone
In Mamou the bayous run blacker than tar and if you hear an old fiddle tune
Look real hard you'll see red on the stars and blood on the ol' Cajun moon
There's blood on the old Cajun moon
I searched every inch of the dancehall but my angel was nowhere in sight
No one would admit they'd seen her and my heart was broken that night
I told the old fiddler my story and he told me one of his own
Fifty years to the day he'd met a girl at the Inn, with bluest eyes he'd ever known
They waltzed to the tune of ol' Jole Blon, two hearts beating as one
Then from the shadows came a glint of cold steel and a shot from a 44 gun
At night when it's quiet if you wander too far and you hear the shriek of a loon
Look real hard you'll see red on the stars and blood on the ol' Cajun moon
There's blood on the old Cajun moon
Oh, the bullet went wild, struck the girl in her heart, slain by love's foolish pride
And as the pale moon eclipsed, into heaven she slipped,
a victim of love's jealous side
(The ol' fiddler, he said,)
"Moonlight'll play tricks on your mem'ries and your heart'll play tricks on your mind
So don't waste your love on her mem'ry, she's a dream you'll never find"
And on hot summer nights don't go after dark in the backwoods near ol' Mamou
If you look real hard you'll see red on the stars and blood on the ol' Cajun moon.
There's blood on the old Cajun moon
Yeah, on hot summer nights don't go after dark in the backwoods near ol' Mamou
Cos if you look real hard you'll see red on the stars and blood on the ol' Cajun moon
There's blood on the old Cajun moon
There's blood on the old Cajun moon. Aye-ee!
